This is Venus de Mars.
I've been out as trans isince 1988. And out in the music world as the founding member, and leader of the Glam-Punk, Trans-Band "Venus de Mars and All The Pretty Horses" since 1993.
I put out my first album in 1984. (Animal Angst - part of my catalogue here on Bandcamp.) Even though that album was released 4 years before I came out as trans, almost all the music on that first album has to do with me struggling to see myself.
With that, in mind you understand I've lived through the anti-trans early dark days. And I've directly experienced the world change. From then to today. And through all of it, I've worked to create music which spoke to my trans-heart.
I am an indy-artist.
I came out well before the music industry knew what to do with an out trans-person. Therefore, once I had enough of those early days pushback, I gave up on all that, and pursued my work independently. Never getting the industry support I'd initially hoped for.
My band and I, though we did everything on our own, always got full support from our audience and our fans. Wherever we found ourselves while touring the UK, Europe, NZ and all over the US, financing it all on our own.
